Metals and Engineering Week or M&E Week is an annual event organized by the Metals Industry Research and Development Center (MIRDC) that showcases advancements, innovations, and initiatives in the Philippine metals, engineering, and allied industries. It provides a platform for collaboration among industry leaders, government, academe, and other stakeholders.
Based on Republic Act No. 6428, as amended by DOST Administrative Order No. 004, series of 2022:
(a) METALS INDUSTRY refers to businesses involved in the manufacture from ore materials to products of all precious, base, and rare metals and their alloys, including all processes from smelting in direct and indirect reduction furnaces, to the final finished product state, either separately or part of an integrated process, namely the production of pig iron, steel ingots, billets, pellets, rolling and/or processing into basic forms such as sheets, plates, strips, tubes, conduits, pipes, rails, rods, tinplates, and the like.
(b) ENGINEERING INDUSTRY refers to the businesses in the entire field of metal manufacture, the primary concern of which is the change of shapes of metal to yield useful products and machine elements. This sector shall also cover the assembly into finished metal products of office, industrial and agricultural machinery and implements, and transport equipment such as railway locomotives and cars, passenger road motor vehicles, motorcycles, trucks, lorries, bicycles and other cycles, aircraft, ships, and boats.
(c) ALLIED INDUSTRY refers to that businesses whose principal manufactured products and services are consumed or used by the metals industries in the processing of metallic raw materials into finished or semi-finished products. These industries cover metallurgical fuels, reductants, and refractories; surface engineering, metal finishing, and heat treatment to render metal performance appropriate for their purpose; metals testing and metrology for quality assurance; and industrial automation, mechatronics, numerical simulations, and artificial intelligence employed for production efficiency.
